Barnaby Bennett

Barnaby Bennett.jpg

Barnaby Bennett is an ethnomusicologist with an ear for the club. The recontextualization of source material through sampling is something that fascinates Barnaby & comes through in his productions, mixes and DJ sets as they are always full of nods to all the fellow crate diggers out there. With a background in ambient/experimental and classic 60s psychedelic music, Barnaby was drawn to more club based material following European tours in 2012-2014 as he found bass music was able to convey certain universal feelings that were difficult to express through verbal language. Following a 2013 tour with Sun Araw where he recieved a crash course in Footwork history & the work of DJ Rashad, Barnaby began to immerse himself in the 160bpm world of Footwork/Juke. The innovative use of sampling in this community was a natural fit - Barnaby has begun releasing a steady trickle of productions and has performed alongside the likes of DJ Earl, Sinistarr & Mel G.

DJ C-SIK (Canadian Red Bull Thre3style Champ and a 3x city DMC champ) has been steady rocking parties for a minute - known for his high energy sets and eclectic style of blending hip-hop, house, soul and future beats across the spectrum, sprinkled with his trademark cuts for good measure. C-SIK is a founder and DJ of one of Western Canada’s largest old school hip-hop and R&B parties, Rewind (running 7 years strong), consistently selling out its 1000+ capacity venue. Lastly, he’s a core member of the Calgary chapter of Skratcher - an international community of DJs who celebrate the art of Turntablism keeping his cuts sharp and DJ nerd level on 100. When C-SIK isn’t rocking parties or nerding out on the cut, you can find him at Beat Drop, Calgary’s premier music production and DJ school, helping to inspire his students to become the next top DJ’s of tomorrow.

Chris Morris

Chris Morris is an audio engineer, studio technician and DIY electronics enthusiast who is passionate about crafting inspiring ideas into reality. His creative work doesn't always start on the screen or end in your hands. His tools can vary from pixels to pliers, sounds to solder, analog to digital. He simply likes to create beautiful, functional things.

At an early age, Chris was more interested in taking his toys apart than playing with them. His curiosity about what makes things tick quickly escalated to disassembling his fathers’ stereo equipment. This obsession followed him into his teenage years where he would modify guitars and amplifiers for himself and friends.

Chris was introduced to building custom FX units and other analog based audio electronics in University. What started as a personal endeavor to expand his sound palate for performance and studio based work ballooned into a small workshop churning out guitar pedals, sequencers, and other audio oddities. Chris’s work gained notoriety with local musicians and abroad resulting in commissions from high profile touring artists.

Since 2009 Chris has managed the technical operations for the Department of Music at the University of Lethbridge where he was instrumental in the technical design of their audio research facilities, recording studios, and labs.  He is responsible for providing technical training to staff, students and faculty as well as maintaining modern and vintage hardware.

Donald Bump

Double D

Dj Double D

My specialty is Hard-Core Techno, Acid, Hard Techno and various styles of Gabber. I play sets which can progress through many styles of music. This works well for me and gives me the flexibility to play for a wide variety of crowds. Occasionally, I play Classic Old School Techno sets and when I feel way too sentimental, I pull out my Old School House music (very funny stuff!). However, my usual intentional sets can range from 150 - 300 BPM, depending if the crowd can take it. I hate empty dance floors, so I don't empty them.

While organizing my own events in Calgary, most of my out of town bookings end up on the West coast of the USA and in Western Canada.

I am usually booked at events with fun people like Delta 9, Lenny Dee, Manu Le Malin, DJ Tron, Omar Santana, Rob Gee, The Speed Freak, Bazooka, Ralphie Dee, Demigod, Ron D Core, Paulina Taylor...

Dr. Dance

Dr Dance Calgary

The story of Charlene Blackburn before she became Dr Dance, is as inspiring as her music is innovative. Once upon a time at burning man there was a young woman named Charlene, nicknamed Char Star. She was an inspiring DJ that was doing more listening than creating. With a purpose and plan to learn through experience, Char wrote a list of all the artists who she wanted to see that week. With that focus, she went out on the playa everyday with friends to accomplish a goal with the list in hand. This list was the enticing force behind what would soon become the sensation now known as Dr Dance. Her determination was noticed by others seeking to experience great music as well. People loved her prodigious taste and she gained a following. Word of mouth spread so fast, people were interested in her prescription. When they needed a music fix of any genre, they went to Char. Thus Dr. Dance was coined and Char was no more. Dr Dance resides in her home city of Calgary and has continued to express this mantra. She constantly continues to gain loyal fans who come to hear what she's learned. When The Hifi Club hosts top notch acts, they ask Dr Dance to stretch them out beforehand. She has a monthly residency if you're ever looking for a cure. She is intuitive, assiduous, she is a talent to experience. She is Dr Dance. Make an appointment.

Isis Graham Esette

For the past 20 years house music artist Esette (Isis Graham) has played an instrumental role in shaping Calgary’s dance music landscape into the internationally recognized hotspot that it is today.

Her 30-plus releases have received support from artists like Maceo Plex, Fred Everything, Giom, Luke McKeehan, Animal Trainer, Vanilla Ace, Seth Troxler, Jamie Jones, DJ Heather, DOZA, and Pezzner.

As a DJ she’s been invited to play notable festivals like Bass Coast, WMC, Decibel, and ADE.

These accolades, combined with her work as co-owner of Calgary-based Substation Recordings, have made Esette a name synonymous with cultural growth, a force constantly driving artists around her to push forward.

Graham first began throwing raves in 1997, witnessing the height of Calgary’s renegade party scene with events that drew as many as 1600 people. In 1999 she began DJing, and after local bylaws brought about the end of raves the following year she brought her Chicago-influenced house tracks to some of the most notable venues of the last decade, appearing at now-legendary spots like the Embassy, Cherry Lounge, Manhattans, and the Night Gallery.

In 2003 Graham was invited to become a founding member of Girls On Decks, a group dedicated to increasing the visibility of women in dance music through podcasts and hosting events. Together with the other members, Graham showed her ability to incite critical change by giving numerous women DJs a platform to be heard.

Over the ten years that followed Graham continued to develop her catalogue as a producer with a string of releases on Tycho Records, collaborations with Vancouver’s Neighbour, and her 2012 album In The Garden.

Then in late 2013 Graham became a co-owner of the newly relaunched Substation Recordings, a label dedicated to showcasing the avant-garde of western Canadian house and techno. Since forming the label, four of her releases have charted internationally, with 2015’s You single reaching 35 on Beatport’s September top 100 Electronica chart.

To see Esette is to witness a catalyst, one of the forces behind Calgary being named by Beatport as one of the cities to rule dance music. Her journey thus far has been propelled by her ability to maintain a uniqueness in her music while harkening back to some of dance music’s most classic sounds.

When it comes to house music, Esette is what innovation looks like.
