Before coming to the great white north in 2002, John spent 25 years playing music and working on gear for a wide variety of musicians in Los Angeles. He originally joined the collections department at NMC on a two-year contract, but lucky for us, he has stayed in Calgary for the past 12 years, repairing instruments and playing the occasional gig now and then to appease his adoring fans. As an electronics technician, John specializes in the repair of electronic musical instruments, particularly synthesizers. His focus for the last few years has been on the conservative restoration of NMC’s three mixing consoles: the Olympic Studios Custom Console, The Rolling Stones Mobile Recording Studio and the Trident A-Range Console. He is looking forward to the major restoration of The Original New Timbral Orchestra (TONTO) after NMC’s move to the new building.

Jessica Phillippe is diehard, born with true grit and skills to pay the bills. Despite her success with the Dirtybird gang, she's still out there in record stores on the regular... digging, uncovering precious gems and weaving them into her dynamic sets with panache. She's a hard-working, dedicated lady who refuses to compromise and aims to rock the dancefloor without relying on the most obvious tracks. Production-wise she's just as fearsome, lacing her tracks with a tough yet bouncy flavour. Her prowess in both disciplines combined with her infectious sense of fun and mind-boggling depth of knowledge make her one of the most revered DJs on the global circuit today.
Ever since the purchase of a cheap set of belt-drive decks and a mixer on her 19th birthday she really hasn't looked back and, after completing her studies in Engineering, the straight-A student jumped head first into her true passion, music. She won a DJ competition in 2005, toured the USA and moved from her hometown, Champaign, Illinois, to the birthplace of house music, Chicago. In the Windy City she endured the struggle that many musicians go through on their pathway to glory but never lost sight of her dream. A move to San Francisco resulted in more hard times, but it wasn't long before her determination and natural talent won through.
Phlip's refusal to give up eventually led her to connect with the Dirtybird crew and make some real progress. Club and festival tours are now a regular occurrence while releases on Claude VonStroke's highly respected imprint, and elsewhere too, have established her as a reputable source of dancefloor killers. People from Skream and Tiga to techno dons Surgeon and Dave Clarke and a bunch of other influential heads threw their weight behind her first truly analogue workout, 'Coefficient', while her latest tech-heavy banger 'Say My Name', which is has been doing immense damage to clubs all over the world, has peaked the interest of Eats Everything, Danny Daze and Huxley on the floor, and taking to the airwaves courtesy of B.Traits, Monki and 1 xtra’s MistaJam . All that hard work has put her up there with the industry's female elite; Nina Kraviz, Heidi, Maya...
Go hear J.Phlip in action and you can expect to experience a full booty workout and have your mind blown. You'll be surprised, energised and occasionally weirded out. This is a lady who knows her stuff, yet continues to refine her craft. Her aim is dancefloor lobotomy, all the while taking the greatest pleasure in seeing the people get loose. A DJ not afraid to put her vision out there, Jess is to thank for passing Eats Everything’s mighty “Entrance Song” to Voitek and Greg (Catz n Dogz) at Pets and the later introduction to Barclay (Claude VonStroke) and Dirtybird. She's embarked on several tours of Europe and the US, attracting an ever-growing fanbase with each electrifying performance. Spending 3 years living and DJing in Berlin has helped Phlip to gain an understanding of the European market – she was only supposed to be there for 5 months, but ya know, there's some kind of time warp in Berlin that does that to people.
2014 already involves more action than a James Bond movie with another tour of Europe in full swing, dates all over the United States including three residencies: Detroit, Miami and San Fransisco – plus there's plenty more production work in the pipeline. Hold tight for yet more analogue awesomeness.
Don't take our word for it, go check her out yourselves... and be prepared to lose it. That's what's up.

Shhhhhhhh! Andrea Graham is known as the Librarian, but don't be fooled by her deceptively quiet composure. Nik co-runs (with his bandmate Jason Troock) Normals Welcome Records, an internationally distributed record label working primarily with electronic music artists, including his own Shout Out Out Out Out and The Paronomasiac releases. There's astonishing depth contained within Nomine's music. His releases to date have displayed a vast breadth of ideas and an intrinsic ear for space and sound design. His sound is an immediately distinctive sound: echo-drenched melodies thatdrift like a distant brass chorus, sub-bass as soft and powerful as an ocean current, and turbulent, continually shifting percussion. These traits are put to the service of deep and driving dubstep tracks, rooted in UK soundsystem culture and rave history, which explode outwards to swallow dancefloors whole.
However, he stresses, dubstep's structures provide only one possible framework to contain a much wider range of musical interests. "Anything pure is good and exciting for me," he says. "I have always kept a reasonable distance from the politics and rules of genres. I dip in and out to see what is going on, and then do my own thing. This is important for me, as I don’t want to get blinded or confused with what I want to do as a composer. My inspiration could quite easily come from an avant-garde/music concretè composition by Pierre Schaeffer, as could it from old Horsepower, dub, drum & bass, house or techno records, and everything in between."
Comparatively little is known about the shadowy producer's origins, but he has a long history within electronic music - he reveals that he used to play music on Rinse FM back in the late 90s, and is a student and lecturer of advanced music technology. "I am fascinated with taking sounds and transforming them into something far beyond their original form, creating new, previously non-existent sounds and unique virtual instruments," he reflects, and it's certainly possible to hear those interests expressing themselves in 'Searching' and 'Nomine's Sound' for Tempa. Both are beguiling combinations of organic and synthetic sounds, never quite settling on any form, their aquatic reverberations evoking images of future cities drowned beneath the waves. Nomine's tracks first found their way into the world during a guest mix from Amit on Youngsta's Rinse FM show, before growing outwards from there and being supported by the likes of Giles Peterson, J:Kenzo, Plastician, Toddla T, Annie Mac and Nihal.
"I like the pace of 140bpm music," he says of writing dubstep tracks. "It allows for more space, groove and dynamics. This culture has also shown that there doesn’t need to be so many rules and restrictions for artists, which opens up creative flow and keeps things interesting." Indeed, with a growing number of fellow artists equally concerned with intricate grooves and carefully sculpted dancefloor dynamics - such as scene figurehead Youngsta, J:Kenzo, Amit Icicle and VIVEK - Nomine is poised among a generation of dubstep and experimental electronic producers reclaiming the style from mainstream club restrictions, and turning it once again into a vehicle for potent exploration.

Jeremy Howard, aka Sinistarr, is truly one of the most interesting and exciting names to hit the underground dance music world this past decade. He has become known as an innovative and consistent producer and a skilled and adventurous DJ, and his sound is an authentic extension of his soul and the pure talent that Jeremy possesses, deftly exploring the soul of yesteryear with a modern context. This sound represents his life living in and around his hometown of Detroit, MI and his collective travels around the world. His creativity defies genres, and sees him infuse his unique sound into a broad range of tempos and vibes. He is equally at home writing emotive headphone music, or in-your-face dance-floor cuts.Jeremy began his movement deeply rooted in the world of Drum & Bass, having releases on legendary labels like Metalheadz Platinum, Renegade Hardware and Creative Source. He continued over the years to evolve his sound as his own prowess as a producer grew, eventually branching out into many different tempos, still maintaining his unique sound exploring the realms of Footwork, Jungle and Techno. Recently he has seen releases on labels like Tectonic, Hospital, Loose Squares and most notably, the 70th release on dBridge’s iconic imprint Exit Records. He has shared the stage with and been supported musically by some of the biggest names in the game like Machinedrum, Fabio, Ivy Lab, Om Unit, Sam Binga, Rockwell & Dabrye to name but a handful. His sounds have been heard all over Rinse FM, NTS, FM Xtra and BBC Radio 1 & 1Xtra and he turned in a DNB60 mix for Friction’s quintessential Drum & Bass show. With all of this momentum, Sinistarr has been increasingly touring and hitting major clubs and festivals like SXSW, Secret Solstice, Tresor, Shambhala Music Festival, Bass Coast, and many others across North America and Europe. There is seemingly no obstacle too high for him, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to watch his amazing journey.
Since their emergence in 2006, SpectraSoul have carved a truly unique position, not only in Drum & Bass, but electronic music as a whole. Having released music on only the very finest and most respected labels in the scene, from Goldie's legendary Metalheadz, to dBridge's boundary breaking Exit Records, and Kasra's ever progressive Critical Music, they went on to become vital members of Friction's irrepressible Shogun Audio imprint.
Beautifully deep and etched with groove yet powerful enough to move any dancefloor, SpectraSoul's stunning musical productions are a far cry from the soulless, synthetic rave fodder so many unfortunately associate with Drum & Bass today. Their creative evolution has seen them incorporate such a variety of tempos and moods - bending genres in the process - yet their underlying sound remains instantly recognisable, and in many ways unique.
The breadth of their creative influences is a rarity within their peer group; taking influence not only from a unique mixture of musical genres and moments in time, but also from wider fields such as photography, art, film and beyond.
With the release of their debut album 'Delay No More' in July 2012, SpectraSoul received well-earned critical acclaim from an idiosyncratic plethora of supporters, and impacted, not only on UK shores, but across the globe leading to a touring schedule covering 4 continents and 30 countries, as well as radio support from far and wide. With the singles 'Light In The Dark' and 'Away With Me' gaining heavy rotation on BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra and 6Music. Their sophomore album, 'The Mistress' followed in 2015, and saw the duo gain notoriety from top DJ's at BBC Radio 1, and 1xtra, with the lead single, 'Always', serving as Annie Mac's 'Special Delivery'. The world tour that followed saw the duo playing extended 3 hour sets to allow them to showcase their discography, as well as the breadth of their taste within the 170bpm format. With this success came a string of high profile remixes for artists such as Jungle, John Newman, Raleigh Ritchie, Benzel, and Dornik, all of which gained support from specialist radio figureheads such as Annie Mac, Mistajam, Huw Stephens, Friction and others. With this success came a string of high profile remixes for artists such as Jungle, Rag N Bone Man, Dornik, Rudimental, Raleigh Ritchie and Benzel, all of which gained support from specialist radio figureheads such as Annie Mac, Mistajam, Huw Stephens, Friction and others.
2016 saw the duo spread their wings and launch their very own label, Ish Chat Music. With the release of three EPs in twelve months, they drastically upped the frequency and diversity of their output, with experimental tracks sitting alongside straight up club music. 001 to 003 garnered wide-ranging support from Radio 1and Beats 1 and from a variety of highly respected music media outlets such as DJ Mag, MixMag, Resident Advisor.
The final quarter of 2017 will see the release of their third studio album, ‘How We Live’; the fourth release on their own imprint. The album is an exploration of the underground sonic pallette and a return to the core ideals that formed the drum and bass genre; uncompromising, energetic, experimental and danceable. The duo, in their trademark fashion, straddle the varying styles within the genre and showcase, once again, the diversity of their production capabilities.
