Saad Al-Jadir / Deckstar

Ephwurd @ Oliver Heldens, Hideout Miami 3.17.16

Artist manager, event producer, and entrepreneur Saad Al-Jadir tunes his ear to progression. It’s this innate ability to remain ahead of the curve, while seamlessly switching between multiple roles that’s elevated him to the modern music industry’s executive vanguard with successful clients such as Datsik, Ephwurd, Autoerotique, and more.

“My two older sisters took me to my first festival—Lollapalooza 1994—when I was twelve-years-old,” he recalls. “I was blown away at the energy and magnitude of the festival culture. In the back of my mind, I knew I’d love to eventually be involved in music one day in some capacity.”

Fast forward a few years later, the British Columbia native discovered electronic music, and it became something he followed religiously. Upon graduating from Centre for Arts & Technology – Kelowna in 2009, he entered the world of concert promotion, cutting his teeth by working with Canadian festivals such as Centre of Gravity and Shambhala. During his work in the festival world, he crossed paths with an old family friend who was an aspiring young talented producer. The conversation about working together began at that point and upon entering uncharted territory together, Saad began managing the artist Datsik.

Saad guided him from the dubstep underground to international renown as a genre pioneer. Datsik would go on to build a rabid worldwide fan base, performing at Coachella, Tomorrowland, Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas, Ultra Music Festival, Stereosonic, Electric Zoo, Identity Tour and more within the first few years as well as being sought out for collaborations and remixes by legends such as Snoop Dogg, Korn, Wu-Tang Clan, and Linkin Park. He would also oversee all logistics and marketing for numerous major cross-country North American tours.

“The key is to always be proactive,” he explains. “I try to think about what may lie ahead down the road, being as rational as possible, and considering all options. A willingness to take on many smaller roles early in my career helped me foster the success of my artists. Whether it was setting up sound to lighting or tour managing, I felt it was all necessary. It’s important to understand every aspect of the business at the same time while seeing the big picture.”

In 2013, he traded Kelowna for Los Angeles, putting down roots in the music mecca of the United States. By the end of that year, industry powerhouses Deckstar Management would welcome him as one of their own.

Now, he continues to expand his own repertoire with other business ventures, keeping an eye open for other opportunities within the industry. Still, it all relies on the same approach for Saad.

“I’m in honest in everything I do,” he leaves off. “The artist and project’s best interest is always in mind, and I’m constantly looking ahead.”

Isis Graham / ESETTE

Isis Graham001.jpg

For the past 20 years house music artist Esette (Isis Graham) has played an instrumental role in shaping Calgary’s dance music landscape into the internationally recognized hotspot that it is today.

Her 30-plus releases have received support from artists like Maceo Plex, Fred Everything, Giom, Luke McKeehan, Animal Trainer, Vanilla Ace, Seth Troxler, Jamie Jones, DJ Heather, DOZA, and Pezzner.

As a DJ she’s been invited to play notable festivals like Bass Coast, WMC, Decibel, and ADE.

These accolades, combined with her work as co-owner of Calgary-based Substation Recordings, have made Esette a name synonymous with cultural growth, a force constantly driving artists around her to push forward.

Graham first began throwing raves in 1997, witnessing the height of Calgary’s renegade party scene with events that drew as many as 1600 people. In 1999 she began DJing, and after local bylaws brought about the end of raves the following year she brought her Chicago-influenced house tracks to some of the most notable venues of the last decade, appearing at now-legendary spots like the Embassy, Cherry Lounge, Manhattans, and the Night Gallery.

In 2003 Graham was invited to become a founding member of Girls On Decks, a group dedicated to increasing the visibility of women in dance music through podcasts and hosting events. Together with the other members, Graham showed her ability to incite critical change by giving numerous women DJs a platform to be heard.

Over the ten years that followed Graham continued to develop her catalogue as a producer with a string of releases on Tycho Records, collaborations with Vancouver’s Neighbour, and her 2012 album In The Garden.

Then in late 2013 Graham became a co-owner of the newly relaunched Substation Recordings, a label dedicated to showcasing the avant-garde of western Canadian house and techno. Since forming the label, four of her releases have charted internationally, with 2015’s You single reaching 35 on Beatport’s September top 100 Electronica chart.

To see Esette is to witness a catalyst, one of the forces behind Calgary being named by Beatport as one of the cities to rule dance music. Her journey thus far has been propelled by her ability to maintain a uniqueness in her music while harkening back to some of dance music’s most classic sounds.

When it comes to house music, Esette is what innovation looks like.
