This year at Bass Coast Festival, AEMCON is happy to present a special panel discussion featuring artists from the Bass Coast line-up and community.
Join us Friday, July 12, 6:45pm-8:15pm, at The Brain for a panel discussion called “The Balancing Act: Strategies for Balancing Your Creativity, Career, and Mental Health.”
About The Panel
Being a professional artist is one of the most difficult career paths one can undertake, but it is also one of the most fulfilling. We live in an era where electronic music culture has exploded across the globe, but the route to artistic success and financial stability seems to change daily. Add to that the mental stress associated with frequent travel, social media, and unhealthy environments, being an artist in 2019 is not for the faint of heart.
Luckily, you're not alone! In this panel discussion notable artists from the Bass Coast line-up & community will share their thoughts, advice, and lessons learned about balancing a life in the creative space. With a focus on solutions and stories from artist's careers, this panel seeks to inspire all those that wish to make art or music their career.
Meet The Panelists
Dj and Producer William Sabatini, aka Sabo, is a staple in the global dance music community. Heavily influenced by a multitude of cultures from around the world, Sabo’s sound holds much of his intrigue. Sabo's productions take you along a journey into sound, a sonic landscape that crosses several musical borders with mixtures of tropical poly-rhythms, warm bass frequencies, rich percussion, lush tribal vocals, and smooth organic textures. When listening you will undoubtedly find yourself resonating with his intention, imagining yourself dancing in an Amazon rainforest or on a desert plane for a Saharan sunrise.
Behind the decks, his innovative approach to each DJ set makes him a consistent stand out at Festivals like Coachella, Lightening in a Bottle, Shambhala, Fusion, Symbiosis, Desert Hearts, Further Future, and Burning Man's Robot Heart bus. As a label boss, he is known for his dynamic vision - heading up his imprint label “Sol*Selectas” which is successfully re-defining a new vein of dance music. It was the Top 10 Best Selling Deep House label on Beatport for 2016, with almost every release breaking into the Top 10 charts of their respective genres. The label captures a wide array of sounds, enlisting up and coming underground producers from all over the globe, as well as prominent well known producers in the industry, focusing the sound on deep spiritual dance music, guiding its listeners into the future realm with positive intention.
Yip Wong aka Deft has become an immediately recognisable producer that skilfully hops from headphone to dance styles through cinematic sound design, driving intricate percussion and immersive atmospheres. Over the last 9 years of releasing music, Deft has built an established reputation of his own signature sonic personality, drawing influence from hip hop, sound design, house, 140, jungle and footwork; a combination which makes him impressively adept at shaking off the constraints of genre and tempo. This has, in turn, gained him the support of BBC Radio 1 & 6 DJ’s such as Gilles Peterson and Mary Anne Hobbs, as well as veterans DJ Shadow, The Glitch Mob and Trevor Jackson amongst many others. Deft’s profile within the electronic music scene has seen him strive from peak to peak through a strong and consistent set of highly praised EP’s, collaborations and remixes through labels such as 20/20 LDN, Exit, 1985 Music, WotNot, Project Mooncircle, Rwina, Brownswood and Hypercolour offshoot Space Hardware to name a few. Along with having the opening track for Maya Jane Coles’ ‘DJ Kicks’ (!K7 Records), Deft has been on remix duties for the likes of Ivy Lab (Critical Music), Ital Tek (Civil Music), Gang Colours (Brownswood), Submerse (Project Mooncircle), Glenn Astro (WotNot), Tiga and Graham Coxon (EMI), and has received huge press support from XLR8R, Pitchfork and FACT Magazine (‘Against The Clock’ feature). As a member of the ever-expanding WotNot music collective and 20/20 LDN crew, Deft began his performances through live shows, bringing high levels of vigor and excitement to dancefloors in the UK, and has now transferred this energy into his eclectic and fruitful DJ sets around the world. Along with headline shows and tours in Japan, Russia, USA / Canada, China and all over Europe, he has supported the likes of Eprom, Skream, Machinedrum, Martyn, Alix Perez, Bullion, Tokimonsta, Daedelus and Paul White. Milestone events along his path have included performances on Boiler Room as well as closing Gilles Peterson’s 2016 Worldwide Awards. From hard-hitting, highly energised dance floor cuts, to lo-fi, powerful soundscapes, this is the ever-evolving world of Deft.
Sara Spicer aka Lion-S, a name that is synonymous with West Coast bass and dance culture has been curating eclectic music for sets and stages, most notably The Livingroom Stage at the world-renowned Shambhala Music Festival. Her contributions date back to when the festival first started gaining steam in the late 90’s. Twenty plus years later and she is still championing trends while bringing some of the deepest and most nurturing soundscapes found in the scene today. Don’t get caught pigeon holing her sound because although her tempos are chill, her collection that has roots in early house and breaks is chalked full of multi-genres.
Jenny Lea of IMUR
"I M U R is one of the raddest acts you’ll find out of Vancouver” (Earmilk) and has fast become synonymous with bass-heavy beats and smooth, sultry vocals. The electronic-r&b trio's tasteful mix of "synthetic textures, real instruments...and heart melting vocals" (Redbull) transcends genre and "resonates on multiple levels" (Exclaim!). Since their inception in 2015, I M U R has performed on the Bumbershoot Festival main stage, playing alongside acts like Flume, Solange and Jorja Smith, was nominated for Electronic/Dance Artist of the year by the Western Canadian Music Awards and landed a #5 spot on Billboard’s Global Viral Spotify Chart.
